AC / DC is an Australian rock band formed in Sydney Columbia in 1973 by the Young brothers, Angus and Malcolm Young. Although classified as hard rock and considered a pioneer of heavy metal, the group members have always classified their music as "rock 'n' roll."

The composition of AC / DC underwent many changes before the release of second album in Australia, TNT in 1975. They then remained unchanged until Mark Evans was replaced by Cliff Williams in 1977. In 1979, the group experienced a worldwide success with their album Highway to Hell. The singer and co-songwriter Bon Scott died February 19th, 1980, after a night of heavy drinking. The group then considered the dissolution but the former Geordie singer Brian Johnson was selected as a replacement for Bon Scott. The same year the band released the album Back in Black, their biggest worldwide hit to date.

The next album, For Those About to Rock We Salute You, was also very successful and is the first of their albums reach the top spot in sales in the United States. The popularity of AC / DC begins to decline in 1983, when Phil Rudd was fired. Drummer Simon Wright then until 1989, and Chris Slade, until the return of Phil Rudd in 1994. It was in 1986 that the band's popularity rises.

The band's latest album to date, Black Ice, released October 20, 2008, is their greatest success in the charts since For Those About to Rock, reaching first place in many countries.

In 2008, AC / DC has sold over 200 million albums worldwide, including 70 million in the United States during its 36 year history and is considered a pioneer of hard rock for all generations since the existence the group. Sales of Back in Black are more than 49 million copies worldwide, including 22 million in the U.S., making it the album of rock's best-selling world and the second album all genres of music together. In the United States is the fifth best selling album music all combined.

AC / DC ranked fourth in the 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock VH1 (although this classification is only supposed to classify artists of hard rock, it includes artists from several genres of rock). AC / DC is ranked 7th Greatest Heavy Metal Band of All Time as of VH1. In 2004, the band was ranked 72nd in the list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time Rolling Stone.
